SquiGIS: A web-based Geographic Information System for the UPLB Network

The researchers developed a system which resides on a machine different from the one keeping the Squid access logs. Both machines belong to the same network. This was done to allow larger memory allocation for the system. The researchers created a log parser to get the logs from the machine containing the Squid access logs through SSH every two hours. The parsed data is stored in a database managed by squiGIS. The data stored in the database was used to analyze the logs and create a web- based monitoring module for the system. Search functionalities specified by the UPLB Information Technology Center were also incorporated into the system.

eMedyx: Electronic Medical Records Security Using Smart Card Technology

EMedyx is an automated medical records system, for much easier storage, retrieval and manipulation of information. It reduces medical errors and causes health services to be much cheaper and faster. And makes access to important clinical data around the globe possible. Access to the system is provided through web-based application, which is developed mainly using PHP and Java(for login), and stand-alone desktop applications, which are created using C#. Both software interacts with each other via SOAP webservice. But what makes it more interesting is its improved security through the use of smart cards to enhance protection similar to credit cards. This study will focus on eMedyx’s security module. Mutual Authentication, Encrypted code submission, SSL certification, and MD5 encryption will all be applied into both web and standalone applications of the system, along with all other identification and user level authorization functions.

Implementing Simulation of Cancer Cell Growth Using Compute Unified Device Architecture (CUDA)

Cancer is one destructive phenomenon in natural sciences. The process in which cancer cells invade or grow within a matrix of cells is very complex. To fully understand and to model it is indeed a great challenge in modern science. In this study, we adopted the model used by Mehrdad Ghaemi and Amene Shahrokhi. This model is the Cellu- lar Potts Model combined with the Lattice-Gas Cellular Automata which simulate the growth of cancer cells. The model exhibits cell-to-cell interactions where a cancer cell has a tendency to be necrotic, be quiescent, to proliferate (mitosis), or undergo apoptosis depending on probability formulas which are also dependent with energy formulas. The simulation of this model was implemented through CUDA which uses the Graphical Processing Unit (GPU) instead of the Central Processing Unit (CPU). GPU is a useful tool in implementing simulations of problems involving intensive computing and high parallel computations.

Billing System: An Accounting Solution for the Private Cloud with Eucalyptus

This research presents a basic accounting facility to the open-source private cloud framework, Eucalyptus. Given the extracted instance information, the utilization cost was computed accordingly. The cost rate applied was based on Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud(Amazon EC2)’s pricing scheme. The system includes a command-line tool for billing and a web interface for data viewing.
